Post Graduate Public Service Fellowships
Third year law students may apply for public service fellowships to begin after graduation for legal, law-related, or policy work for government or public interest organizations; public defenders; prosecutors; federal, state, and local government agencies; other 501(c)(3) organizations; non-U.S. nonprofit organizations with public service missions; legislative offices; and judges and courts. Political campaign work is not eligible.
Compensation and Length of Service
A maximum fellowship is $3600 for 400 hours of work. It is typical for May graduates to begin work between August 1 and September 15, and for December graduates to begin work between March 1 and April 1. Pro rata fellowships are available for positions requiring less than 400 hours of work.
Fellowships are awarded on a rolling basis beginning March 1 for May graduates and November 1 for December graduates, so early applications are encouraged.
In order to apply, submit
- A written fellowship request to the Office of Career Services, and
- A written offer of a post-graduate fellowship position on the organization's letterhead, which must include:
- a contact person's name, title, postal and e-mail addresses, and phone and fax numbers;
- if the position is compensated, a statement of how much the student will earn from the organization;
- the number of weeks to be worked, as well as the number of hours per week; and
- a brief description of the student's duties.
